The Secret of Packing Glassware and Kitchenware

The kitchen is the center of the house but during the move day it may seem as the most vulnerable room in the house. The most anxiety is usually created by packing your dishes, glasses and treasured china. It is the retching noise of a snapping plate or a smashing glass which is what we all dread.

But that does not necessarily have to be so. We have successfully delivered thousands of kitchens at PMS Packers and Movers. The trick does not lie in chance it is a technique. By proper techniques and equipments you can be sure that your kitchenware will be at your new house just as perfect as it was at the old one.

This is our step-by-step all-professional recommendation of how to pack your kitchen in a totally breakage-free move.

Phase 1: Gather Your Arsenal- The Right Tools to the Job.

You cannot put delicate objects away with boxes that are weak and newspaper of yesterday. There should be no bargaining on good materials.

You will need:

Strong, Specialty Boxes: Do not use huge boxes. You require dish-pack boxes in case of dishes. In the case of glasses, small boxes are recommendable to eliminate overloading.

Packing Paper: This is the MVP. Do not use newspaper because the ink may leak out on your dishes and stain them permanently, particularly when it is humid. Packing made of blank, acid-free paper is safe and offers a great cushion.

Bubble Wrap: This is necessary to use in fragile items that need more protection as well as glass lids and to add an additional protection.

Good Packing tape: The purpose of this is to have a powerful dispenser and a tough piece of tape to fit boxes.

A Permanent Marker: To be boldly marked.

Cell Kits / Cardboard Dividers: These provide separate compartments to glasses and stem wares almost eliminating the chances of knocking into each other.

Phase 2: The Packing Process -A Stepwise Guide.

How to Pack Flatware and Plates like a pro.

The Wrong Way: Laying plates in a box flat.

The Right Way: Stuffing them on their side.

Line the Box: Cut up a piece of packing paper, crumple it and make a cushioning layer on the bottom of your dish-pack box.

Wrap A Plate: Packing Paper:Wrap each plate individually in 2-3 pieces of packing paper. Apply the method of the bartender wrap: put the plate in a diagonal position on the piece of paper, and bend the corners around the plate and roll it. This forms a cushioned padded pouch to each dish.

Packing: Put wrapped plates in the box standing on their sides one above the other, as records in a box. This spreads pressure and impact by the strongest section of the plate, but not the fragile center.

Cushion and Fill: Secure the plates in place to prevent movements. Stuff in any holes with crumpled packing paper. The objective is a zero movement within the box.

Top it Off: After filling the box, place a last layer of paper on the top after crumpling it up, and then close the box.

Packing of Glasses, Mugs, and Stemware.

The same applies to the principle of individual wrapping and zero movement.

Wrap Individually: Wrapping Pack each glass, mug, or wine glass tightly in a packing paper. In the case of fragile stemwares, place the paper on top of the first layer of bubble wrap around the stem and bowl.

Apply a Cardboard Divider: In case of a cell kit, take each wrapped glass and place it in compartment. This is the most absolute safe way.

The No-Divider Technique: In case you do not have dividers, stand the wrapped glasses in the small box on top of one another. Stuff them all in tight, stuff every single hole with crumpled paper. They must be tight that not a bit can move.

Heavy to the Bottom, Light to the Top: It is always better not to place heavy objects over fragile glasses. Mugs can also be packed separately in their own box through the same manner.

Packing Pots and Pans and sharp objects.

Pots and Pans: These are mostly of good durability. You can nest them together. In order to avoid scratches, insert a piece of packing paper or a small towel between every one. Put the lids separately and wrap around the box sides.

Knives and Sharp Objects: To be on the safe side, it is recommended to wrap sharp blades. Cover sharp edge with cardboard or bubble wrap and use tape to secure the edge. Then you can either put them in a drawer or you can pack them vertically in a well-labeled box. Exposed sharp edges should not be left.

Phase 3: Hints and Pits to Make Notes of.

label Relentlessly: On all sides must be printed in large red capital letters (or in any color you prefer) the text "KITCHEN" followed by the contents and, most importantly, FRAGile. Use glassware box arrows of ?THIS SIDE UP.

Don’t Overpack: Boxes of dishes are very heavy. In case you find it too heavy to carry the box, then it is too heavy and chances are the bottom of the box will break out. Heavy items should be packed in smaller boxes.

Clean Everything: This is to make sure that everything is clean and fully dry before it is packed. The moisture that is trapped may cause mildew.

The First-Night Box: Prepare a separate box with some essentials and that includes two mugs, plates, cutlery, a pot, a pan, and the coffee maker. You are not scrambling during your first night, this is the first kitchen box that you are going to open.
